Does anyone have any idea about the difference between XAT exam and other MBA entrance test? – Unlike its other counterparts such as CAT, MAT, CMAT, etc, it has a surprise element which includes a stipulated 20 minutes time slot to write a page long essay.

Generally, managers and business executives are supposed to have good communication skills; they are supposed to be able to present their thoughts in a very precise, rational and coherent manner. Therefore, essays are considered as a pre-interview yardstick to judge an aspirant’s communication skills and his understanding about diversified topics which directly or indirectly affect the society on a whole. It helps the examiner and the college authorities to judge some hidden facets of a candidate’s personality. Therefore, it is very important to have a good hold on writing articles to get good XAT results. Here are some writing tips to improve your skills.

First of all, to write an informative and interesting essay, the aspirant should possess a good command over a variety of subjects. Thus, while preparing for this particular portion of XAT exam one should try to get knowledge about diversified subjects; right from politics to religion and from philosophy to physiology. This will help them to have an elaborative and well written content.

An essay rich with aptly used vocabulary will guarantee excellent XAT results. So, always be careful to use right word at right place. Try to prevent redundancy or repetition of the words or ideas. It is better to make small notes or jot down the whole idea into brief points. Using example or a brief narration of real life incidences can be helpful to develop the content into an interesting article.

The objective to include an essay paper in the XAT exam is to evaluate the logical abilities and coherence of the aspirant. So, it is better to strategize thoughts for an uninterrupted thought process, before one starts writing. Try to make sure that the content does not get drifted away from the main topic; therefore, not making it sound incoherent or out of place.

Be very clear –it is mantra to gain brilliant XAT results. Never try to beat around the bush nor cut down the words; be very precise while representing your thoughts, also put the prejudices aside and make sure to give an unbiased account. Moreover, a candidate should be careful not to use jargons, slangs or any kind of foul language; it leaves an unfavorable impression.

“First impression is the last impression” – so following this principle; it is always recommended to give a good (terrific) start to your essay in XAT exam. One can begin with some nice quotation or by a narration of some sort of story or real life incidents. Moreover, support your ideas with some relevant examples; this will add more value to the content, thus it will highlight the skills and intellect of a candidate. Apart from this, end the essay with a logical conclusion; avoid giving an abrupt ending to the essay.

Last, but not the least making grammatical errors can adversely affect one’s XAT results; so it is better to be prepared with adequate knowledge about correct sentence formation and tense to avoid silly mistake. Once, the date for XAT approaches, make sure to train the brain to think and write swiftly; because the paper only has 20 minutes, therefore, a candidate has be really quick and at the same time clear and coherent.

Summary

XAT result depends on the aggregate marks of the objective type and essay paper. So, it is advisable to concentrate time and energy on brushing up one’s intellect as well as writing skills.

So if you have missed a chance to make it to the IIM and other top 20 B-schools, joining one of University based MBA programs could be a wise choice. When compared with Tier-2 and Tier-3 B-schools, these University MBA programs offer many advantages like quality education, better brand name, and in some cases lower fee structure. Following are some of the advantages which you will incur by pursuing MBA from Universities.

Integration with other disciplines:

The biggest advantage of university based management programmes is that it integrates MBA programs with other disciplines like Engineering, Science, to offer a multi-disciplinary environment to students.

This leads students to think in multi-direction and widens their horizon. The MBA students get to exchange thoughts with students from other discipline on regular basis and this helps them to develop out-of-box ideas.

Dr. Rajan Saxena, Vice Chancellor, NMIMS University says, “At NMIMS we have adopted a ‘multidisciplinary integration’ approach. Rather than teaching marketing, sales, finance, etc in different silos, we have developed an integrated module in which the student gets to learn everything in an interlinked manner during its management education. The approach is towards dealing with ‘business’ as a whole.”

Dr. Michael Barnes, Dean and Professor, Jindal Global Business School agrees with the former. “As you know we have four different schools under our university including a Law school, School of International Affairs and School of Governance and Public Policy, one of the key factor that distinguishes business school like ours is that we give multi-disciplinary exposure to our students,” says Dr. Barnes, adding, “This approach helps applied research and inter-disciplinary research, and makes overall educational environment robust.”

Brand name:

Since there are many professional programs like engineering, medicine, architecture that are run within a university set up, a University based MBA programme comes with a higher level of credibility. This leads to a good brand name to the management faculty in the university, as Dr. Parag Diwan, Founder Vice-Chancellor of UPES, says, “Business School in a university is jewel in the crown. It builds the brand.”

Also, Universities have higher media budgets to promote themselves. Hence their name is well known, compared to relatively unknown Tier-3 B-schools.

Affordable programmes:

Last but not the least, given the large scale of operation, the fee structure of university MBA programmes are more affordable compared to standalone private B-schools. No wonder, a better quality offering at comparatively lower or similar cost is a huge attraction for MBA aspirants.

While MBA programmes at Government Universities have a fee structure that is significantly lower as compared to other B-schools, fee structure in most of the Private Universities range between Rs 5 Lakh to Rs 8 Lakh for two-year full time MBA programmes.

For example, the annual fee for MBA programme at FMS, University of Delhi is Rs 10,500 approximately only. But the cost of MBA programme at Amity University and Jaypee Business School (JBS) is around Rs 5 Lakh, and that of Symbiosis International University (SIU) and JKLU is around Rs 8 lakh. The two year MBA programmes at UPES also cost about Rs 7 lakh. The above mentioned fee structure exclude hostel and accommodation fees.

The final selection of a student in a B-School does not depend on a single factor, but on multiple parameters. These parameters are assigned with separate weightages which make it easier for the B-schools to select the students. In this article of MBAUniverse.com, we will share with you the different parameters which are considered for the final selection of the students and the weightage given to them.
Along with your MBA entrance exam score, your profile plays a vital role. There are several B-schools which provide more weightage to the profile than that of the MBA entrance exam score. Let us have a look at the various B-schools’ parameters and the weightages assigned to them.
IIMs
IIMs give the weightage to the profiles while making the shortlist of the candidates. The final selection bears the weightage on CAT scores, WAT, PI and or GD rounds.
For making the final selection, IIM Bangalore considers the performance in Personal Interview and Note Writing, past academic performance, work experience and CAT scores. “Since IIMB follows a comprehensive multi-criteria process at the pre-PI stage, it is able to identify many candidates for the PI who have an excellent academic record and work experience. Sometimes, candidates who have very good work experience and academic records narrowly miss to find a place among candidates shortlisted completely on the basis of CAT scores. We effectively replace candidates who have only a high CAT score but score poorly in terms of their past academic record and work experience. IIMB emphasizes consistent and high performance in past academics,” says IIM Bangalore.

IIM Indore considers the CAT scores and the performance in WAT and PI for the final selection. The weightages in percentage are as follows:

CAT 2011 (50%) + WAT (15%) + PI (35%)

For IIM Kozhikode, CAT and past academic records consist of a combined weightage of 30 per cent and performance in PI and WAT are given 35 per cent and 20 per cent weightage respectively. The weightage given to Profile is 15 per cent.

Coming to the new IIMs, IIM Ranchi gives 40 per cent weight to the CAT scores and equal weightage is given to the PI & WA scores. Profiles of the candidates carry 20 per cent weightage. IIM Trichy has an even lower weightage for CAT scores for the final selection, which is 35 per cent.

The other new IIMs like IIM Rohtak, Raipur and Udaipur give 50 per cent weightage to the CAT scores for the final round of selection. Rest of the weightage is given to the performance in PI and Written Ability Test and Profiles of the candidates.

Now let us have a look at the trends at the private B-schools.

MDI Gurgaon

MDI Gurgaon puts a high weightage on CAT scores which is 70 per cent. This is undoubtedly, one of the highest weightage on CAT given by top B-schools. The rest of the 30 per cent is assigned to Group Discussion, Personal Interview, Academic records (Class 10 and Class 12 performances) and Work Experience. Prof. N P Singh, Admission Chairperson, MDI Gurgaon states, “We have not changed the selection criteria of MDI Gurgaon. This selection process is followed over the years and we aim to follow it for the admission of this year as well.”

IMT Ghaziabad, Nagpur and Hyderabad

IMT Group of Institutes, constituting IMT Ghaziabad, IMT Nagpur and IMT Hyderabad gives 50 per cent weightage to the CAT scores. “We put 50 per cent weightage to the CAT scores. The other factors which we consider for the final selection are performance in GDPI, past academic performances and work experience. The rest of the 50 per cent is assigned to these criteria. We give equal importance to the performance in CAT as well as GDPI and past academic performance and quality of work experience,” mentions Dr. A M Sherry, Admission Chairperson, IMT Group of Institutes.

BIMTECH Greater Noida

BIMTECH Greater Noida considers CAT, XAT and MAT scores for admission. The final selection is done on the basis of Written Ability Test (WAT), GD and PI. Along with the performance in these factors, due weightages are given to past academic records and miscellaneous factors. The weightages given to each of these factors are as follows:

Apart from GD, PI and or Written Ability Test, the other common parameters are past academic records and work experience. But some B-schools also look for several other parameters such as Extra Curricular Activities, noteworthy achievements to name a few.

These B-schools are accepting the applications. The GDPI rounds of some of these B-schools have already started, while the others will start soon. Talking about the admission process, Harpreet Singh, Executive Director, JRE Group of Institutes said, “We are receiving an overwhelming response from across the country this year. This year the cut-off percentile for CAT is 70 percentile, and for MAT it is 80 percentile for PGDM. The process will be even more stringent, since we want to retain our commitment to quality education. One of the Main reasons of good response is that the current batch of students is quite happy with the delivery of world class pedagogy in the classroom, Summer Internships and regular Industry interactions.”
